What is calibration and why is it important?
In practice, calibration means comparing a measuring instrument with a traceable reference standard to ensure that the instrument’s readings are accurate. It is a fundamental process for detecting and reducing measurement uncertainty – something that helps you avoid incorrect measurement values, which could lead to costly mistakes or safety risks.
How often a measuring instrument should be calibrated depends on several factors, including how often it is used, the environment in which it operates, and the requirements set by manufacturers, authorities, or internal quality procedures. For instruments such as pressure gauges, voltage testers, and multimeters, checks are recommended at least once a year. In more demanding environments, shorter intervals may be necessary.
DEKRA is accredited by SWEDAC in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025, which means that parts of our methods meet international requirements. After calibration, you will receive a calibration certificate that documents measurement uncertainty and traceability – an important element for audits and quality controls. For non-accredited methods, a certificate of traceability is provided.
