Decision based on calculation, analysis, and measurement

Our analyses and studies result in high-quality decision-making material.

Calculation and simulation for structural integrity

Make informed decisions with structural strength calculations and lifetime assessments.

We help you take control of the structural integrity of your assets, verify load-bearing capacity, understand dynamic behaviour and optimise the service life of structures or systems through advanced structural calculations, simulations and technical analyses.

What do you need help with?

Do you need to verify a new or existing structure or understand a failure or damage mechanism?
Whether you need to verify a new or existing structure, assess damage or understand remaining service life, our specialists can help you make informed decisions.

Methodology

Each assignment is tailored to the customer’s operations and needs, but typically follows a structured process:
We collect design documentation, drawings, material data, operating conditions, historical damage data and measurement data to provide input for the calculation model.
Existing documentation and data are analysed to identify:
  • Geometric dimensions.
  • Material properties.
  • Potential environmental effects.
  • Loads, such as static, dynamic or cyclic loads, affecting the structure during normal operation or exceptional events.
Development of numerical models, such as finite element models (FEM) or analytical calculation models, to calculate parameters including: strain, stress, elastic or plastic deformation, forces and moments, vibrations, natural frequencies and local damage due to fatigue or crack growth.
The results are evaluated against relevant acceptance criteria or applicable standards, regulations and industry requirements.
We present clear conclusions based on the calculation results. These address the customer’s specific questions and fulfil the intended purpose of the analysis as a basis for decision-making.
Practical recommendations and proposed measures are provided to support continued safe operation and asset management.

Our expertise in calculation and simulation

DEKRA helps owners and operators of load-bearing assets understand how structures and their components are affected under actual operating conditions, by operationally induced degradation or by the presence of damage or defects.
Through advanced calculations and simulations, we can identify critical loads, verify structural safety and assess remaining service life.
Our structural integrity specialists combine theoretical analysis with measurement data, materials expertise and experience from complex facilities and technical systems. The result is a fact-based basis for decision-making that helps reduce risks, optimise maintenance and support investments and life extension.

Our areas of expertise

Through advanced calculations, analyses and simulations, we help you assess the strength, performance and service life of structures. Our specialists provide a sound basis for informed decisions – from the design of new structures to the safe operation, maintenance and life extension of existing ones.
We evaluate stresses, deformations and load-bearing capacity in new and existing structures, mechanical components and welded structures. Analyses are performed, for example, using the finite element method (FEM).
We also develop calculation bases for lifting equipment and determine maximum permissible loads in accordance with the Machinery Directive.
We assess the remaining service life of structures exposed to fatigue and/or other damage mechanisms, such as corrosion and wear.
We perform an overall assessment of a structure’s history and current service-life status. We establish the conditions and documentation required to extend the service life beyond the original design life.
Where required, we develop inspection and monitoring programmes for periodic non-destructive testing (NDT).
Analysis of cracks and defects to assess safe operation, remaining service life, damage tolerance and the need for corrective measures.
We use fracture mechanics to assess the conditions for continued safe operation when damage has been identified or crack-related issues are ongoing. We provide a basis for decisions on repair and whether corrective action can be deferred until the next scheduled shutdown.
Investigation of resonance phenomena, vibrations, dynamic loads and comfort-related issues in vehicles, machinery and load-bearing structures.
Specialised analyses for railway vehicles and infrastructure, including fatigue assessments, vehicle dynamics, load analysis and service-life assessments.
We also analyse human-induced vibrations in bridges, platforms, walkways and other structures where comfort and safety are important parameters.

Standards and regulations

Depending on the application, we work in accordance with relevant national and international standards or recommendations, including:
  • EN 13001 and ISO 12482 (cranes).
  • EN 12663 or EN 13749 (railway rolling stock).
  • EN 13445 (pressure vessels).
  • Eurocodes (EN 1990–1999).
  • IIW Recommendations for Fatigue Design.
  • R6 Assessment Procedure implemented in ISAAC.
  • BS 7910.
  • API 579 (Fitness-for-Service).
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes.
  • IEC 61400 (wind turbines).
  • EN 13814 (fairground and amusement rides).
By combining advanced calculation tools with practical experience and measurement data from real-world facilities, DEKRA provides analyses that deliver reliable decision support for both new and existing assets.
